This year is the 150th Anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. We found a few fun ways for your family to share in the celebrations. So, put on your rabbit ears and pocket watch and don’t be late for these very important dates:  Alice’s Day on Saturday 7

July and Sunday 8 July in Oxford. Visit www.storymuseum.org.uk for a full list of events and participants.

Or how about a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party?

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden will be hosting a Mad Hatter’s teaparty at their Children’s Day 29 August. “Have tea with Alice, the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Sleepy Dormouse. Dress up as your favourite character from Alice in Wonderland and join in the fun and games. Visit www.fairhavengarden.co.uk for more information.

If you can’t make an Alice in Wonderland event, your family can still add a little of Alice’s Wonderland fun to your summer with these ideas!

  • Take a picnic and explore the towpath walk at the River Thames. There are guided walks or pop to the library and learn about the history before you go.
  • Help your child to learn to tell the time, like the white rabbit, or play matching pairs games in honour of Tweedledum and Tweedledee.
  • Encourage your child to have some rhyming fun like the dormouse “Twinkle twinkle, little bat, How I wonder what you're at, Up above the world you fly, Like a tea tray in the sky.” or make up some fun words like the Jabberwocky.
  • Have a “Mad” tea party like the Mad Hatter and dress up for no other reason than fun.
  • Make a tiny tea set from play dough.
  • Play card games, or build card towers together, being careful not to make the Queen of Hearts cross!
  • For a real Wonderland treat perhaps take a family boat trip along the same stretch of the River Thames as Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell have travelled. Visit www.oxfordrivercruises.com for more information.
