Enchanting Tales for Christmas

A magical and alternative tale for your children this Christmas?

Babushka front cover. Wondeful Christmas story to share with your child.

This year we wanted to find some special books to curl up with in front of the fireplace and share at Christmas. For those of you who don’t know the Kideeko family; books are a passion of ours, so we have a wide selection of tales about Santa Claus, snow and of course the Nativity,  but this year we wanted to find something a little bit different. Whenever we look for something special to join our overflowing bookshelf we always look to Barefoot Books, as they always seem to offer a new twist on an old and ancient tale, (the old stories are always a favourite, after all they have stood the test of time). A story that’s almost been forgotten is lovingly revived by Barefoot, time and time again.  They travel the world finding magical stories which warm the heart, make us consider others feelings and leave us wanting more! We wanted to share two of the little treasures we have found for Christmas 2011.

Babushka

(for ages 3-7yrs old)

Retold by Sandra Ann Horn | Illustrated by Sophie Fatus

If you already know the story it will be a favourite. This tale is one that touches a small place in the heart and stays with you for many years. The story is about Babushka, a woman who is too busy worrying about the small things in life and misses the opportunity to accompany the Three Kings to give a gift to Baby Jesus. The story unfolds to show us that the more you give away in love, the more you will receive. This particular version of Babushka is beautifully illustrated by the wonderful Sophie Fatus (we think these are some of her best illustrations ever!)

The Princess and the White Bear King book cover. Special story to share with your child about aprincess and a polar bear.

The Princess and the White Bear King

(for ages 5 – 11yrs old)

Retold by Tanya Robyn Batt | Illustrated by Nicoletta Ceccoli | Narrated by Miranda Richardson

This is a refreshing story that deviates from the sweet, pink princess stories that we are familiar with. A blend of three different fairy tales originating in Northern Europe, it has a wonderful dark side to it with some really deep meanings. The illustrations are beautiful and parents will love this book as much as the children. It includes a CD which is always good to have. Although I am an advocate of reading with your child, there is always an evening when you are running around getting ready to go out, especially at this time of year. So, the CD can be perfect for those times and will even be useful, in all the hustle and bustle, for when your child just wants to have some quiet time alone.

You and your child will enjoy this wonderful journey with the beautiful princess and the majestic white bear. You will find your heart beating faster as the princess strives to prove her loyalty and strength to regain her lost chance of happiness.
