Bilingual children’s books with a difference!
We were delighted to be asked to review the latest bilingual phenomena to be launched in this country. After all we know that both Easy Jet and British Airways have noticed this learning programme, both actively becoming involved in promoting the books and flash cards. However, as we know, being parents and grandparents, sometimes what seems like an amazing idea to us is not always a hit with the youngsters that they are designed for.
The timing to review the books couldn’t have been better; we were two weeks away from flying off to Spain to visit Grandma and Grandpa! Our five year old loved the two books and was really keen to play with the flash cards, even testing his older sibling which was slightly unfair as we lived in Spain for several years before he was born!
The books were really lovely with colourful interesting pictures and stories that would be relevant to many children reading them. Both stories follow a child as they pack for their holiday in Spain and both forge a friendship with a Spanish child. We particularly liked this, as any parent having taken their child to a foreign country will know, children’s play is a universal language and they teach each other effortlessly, learning key words in a foreign language without realising it. These books are cleverly designed in the same way. Exposing your child to a new language in a fun way, they are not even aware that they are learning. Our particular favourite part was counting in Spanish and the result of reading the books a five year old beckoning to us as we left the plane “Vamos! Vamos!”
