More Interesting than your Teacher

We were asked by a friendly grandad, Stuart Wright, to review his book of interesting facts, bite-size chunks of knowledge and general explanations for those questions you never really know the answers too!

general knowledge books for kids young readers more interesting than your teacher

Before we start let me tell you that the review panel was tough one…particularly our 13 year old whose attention span is about that of a goldfish most of the time! However we took this book on holiday with us and I presented it to him on the plane after the refreshments had been and gone, the iPod had deafened him and the magazine was a crumpled heap on the floor.

I felt that it at least had a chance of being absorbed, however I was pleasantly surprised as not only was he flicking through sharing profound pieces of information with us he was also unwilling to let me have it back and slipped it into his holdall. So far so good! More Interesting than your Teacher popped up several times by the pool and was seen handed backwards and forwards amongst my offspring, even I found myself sat on the sunbed reading Page 70 The World’s Largest and Most Valuable Lumps, and wondering if The Hope Diamond had any chance of turning up in my jewellery box…a girl can but hope!

Stuart obviously has some experience with children and seems aware than you can make learning fun, his colourful and interesting explanations where only matched by the great illustrations in the book. With some very amusing, profound and surprising topics Stuart stays true to the title of the book.

fascinating facts encouraging your child to read

“Why can’t they write things down in layman’s terms instead of blinding us all with science, and why don’t they make it interesting for us? A few giggles woven in would be also be nice from time to time but that’s not the done thing and I don’t understand why – do they do it on purpose?”

So if you think your family would benefit from knowing whether fish ever sleep, whether dogs are colour blind or what is the generally accepted largest number…Which I have to spill the beans and tell you is Graham’s number and you will have to get hold of More Interesting than your Teacher to find out what Graham’s number actually is!
