Creating a Family Office

When you announce that you have a new baby on the way every one wants to share advice on those sleepless nights and the best gymnastics class, but no one seems to mention the amount of admin work involved in raising a family!

Just a little space

Organising your family’s paperwork can be a real chore, but you don’t need a whole office or personal assistant to do it, although that would be nice! The key is finding a small spot in the house to claim as your own and do a little each day to keep it organised. It might not be the highlight of your day, but managing the paperwork will go a long way in reducing stress for everyone in your family.

Whether you clear out a kitchen cupboard and have that area with the workspace below to sort through the bills and appointments, or you are lucky enough to have a whole room, make it a clutter free, fresh and welcoming space. Making it a nice place to work in will help to make it less of a chore.

Benefits of being organised.

  • Be able to find that all important letter to sign for school - not feeling like the “bad” parent!
  • Keep track of bills and payments - less late fees and fines
  • Keep track of appointments - less anxiety and stress at being late or missing appointments.
  • A place for everything – Have one, and only one place for bills, insurance, school paperwork etc.It makes finding things so much easier if the only place that you ever put the car insurance paperwork is in the car insurance file!
  • Sharing the family’s situation with your partner – if everything is organised, you can both see clearly where you are and can be on the same page together, making the teamwork so much easier even if the road gets a little bumpy!
  • Spending just a few minutes each day to sort the days paperwork properly will actually give you more time for fun with the family as you won’t have to turn the house upside down trying to find that passport!
  • Let your children see the work and organisation involved in running a household. Talk to them about some of the decisions that you make and explain why. These are lessons that aren’t taught outside of the home but are essential in making sure that your grown up children can cope when they leave the nest.
