Sunny days can come as a bit of a surprise in Britain, so be prepared and have your picnic bag at the ready should the sun decide to shine!

We love eating outdoors, just being out in the fresh air seems to put everyone in a better mood and there is a bit more room for everyone to get along, especially if you meet up with other friends and families. But if you aren’t used to making the most of those brighter days it might be a bit daunting putting a picnic together. Here are some of our top tips for being ready to rush outdoors!

Have a large bag, basket or box handy that is already filled with your picnic essentials.  Laundry bags are inexpensive and a great size for some of the bulkier essentials. Blanket, wipes, tissues, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, a small first aid kit, Frisbee/bats and balls, nature spotting books, binoculars and playing cards are some of the things that are most useful.

Keep ice packs stored in the freezer ready to use to keep your food at the right temperature. Frozen yoghurt treats are a great healthy snack and can double up as mini ice packs to keep the picnic cool.  Nuts, dried fruits, apples, satsumas, apricots and bananas are all easily portable and relatively fuss free foods to have on a picnic. Share the sandwich making with the children, pack up some water bottles and you will be ready to go!

Remember that the weather can get cooler if the sun decides to hide behind the clouds while you are all out; so make sure everyone has something warmer to put on as well. If everyone is comfortable they will enjoy themselves for longer – and the longer everyone is out of the house enjoying themselves, the less mess there is to tidy up at home! (Now you know why we really love picnics so much!)

Rain, rain go away

And if the rain just won’t stop long enough to pack everyone outside for your picnic, then turn the tv off, spread out a blanket and enjoy your picnic at home.  Play board games instead of ball games, charades instead of collecting seashells!

Play it safe!

Always make sure that your children are playing where you can see them. This is especially important if there may be water near by.
