Sporting Fun and Games

Putting together a party for the whole family can be much easier when there is a theme, and what better way to enjoy the outdoors this summer than to have a Sporting Fun and Games party.

But, before you panic that there would be far too many ‘hurdles’ to overcome, check out our tips to keep your party simply fun!

A good tip is to try to have something for your guests to get involved in as soon as they arrive. It helps to keep them busy while you are greeting other guests. They can have fun making a flag or trying to find the hidden pieces of a flag to match together.

Fun and Games!

A few ideas to get you started - brainstorm with the family to come up with your own family events, then pick out the best ones, keeping a few extras in case you need them.

  • Really Big Relay involves passing objects that are large but light - adding extra ones with each pass (for adults try a very large keep fit ball, for children try a swimming pool foam noodle)
  • Space Hopper High Jump – Measure how high you can bounce, probably in centimetres! Everyone can join in this one, but it’s so much fun that some adults maybe reluctant to share their space hopper!
  • Sychronized Hula Hooping– let the adults show off some hip action and see who can keep in time with the twirling. Let the children judge - and if you are feeling brave let them hold up their numbered scores!
  • Laundry Basket Ball  Use a laundry basket on the ground so that toddlers can join in the game and have a go at getting “baskets” too.

There are more ridiculous races on our Kideeko Club pages for children.

Try to pace the party games – have a few quieter games up your sleeve if you need to slow down the action. A Frozen Sport tournament might come in handy – have everyone pose as if they are doing their favourite sport and when you say “freeze” see who can last the longest without moving, might be a great photo opportunity too!

Refreshments:

Food from around the world is a great way to encourage children to try something a little different. After tasting they could try to find the country it came from on the map. You can be as adventurous as your culinary skills allow, but remember the aim of the day is fun, so if you aren’t the next Nigella, don’t focus on the food. Just have plenty of water available and perhaps ask everyone to bring some snacks to share.

Don't Forget!
  • Have a first aid kit handy and an ice pack in the freezer -  grazed knees and bumps and bruises do sometimes happen in all the excitement.
  • For the more reluctant participants pair them up with an encouraging friend.
  • If grandparents aren’t able to actually join in the games, there can always be medals for Outstanding Audience.
  • Simple medals made from chocolate coins and ribbon are the perfect gifts for your party goers to take home.
  • Don’t be too strict on the rules, remember the idea is that everyone joins in and has fun. Use the day to demonstrate good sportsmanship and when it’s all over don’t forget to give yourself a medal!
